WHAT IS CTPAT?
CTPAT is a voluntary, joint government/business initiative to build cooperative relationships that strengthen and secure the overall supply chain and border security.
CTPAT promotes the education of supply chain partners about security procedures critical to minimizing the threat of terrorist incidents.
Failure to implement these procedures may become apparent during a targeted or random inspection and possibly lead to seizures, delays, confiscations, serious penalties, CBP targeting of future shipments, and penalties to the shipper.
Becoming a validated CTPAT member (Tier 2 and above) also has important benefits:
Reduction of the number of inspections and audits of cargo coming into the US, resulting in lower inspection and cargo fees
Mitigation of penalty amounts up to 50% or more
Being a CTPAT member is the only avenue available to get the maximum mitigation of penalties and liquidated damages.
